An old Igbo adage says ‘when a man completes his growth, he waits for the others’. You will loose your relationship with people if you think or act as if they will perpetually remain small to you. A time comes when people you are mentoring will grow to become your colleagues. You must be wise to recognise this stage in their lives and treat them as such. The only difference would be that you are now the senior colleague. We learned this from Jesus – John 15:15 “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

If you do something good to someone and talk about it by yourself as a favour to him or her then you are proud. A truly humble man will never praise himself – Pro 27:2 “Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.” Allow that man you had helped to testify by himself of how God used you to help him. This will give you respect and honour.
